Blu-Ray Disc (BRD)

A new type of storage format that offers a storage capacity of up to 50GB, making it perfect for recording high definition broadcasts. Films can also be released on DVD packed with far more extra features.

Blu-Ray Disc technology competed with the HD DVD format in the high definition optical disc format war. However, in February 2008, Toshiba abandoned the HD DVD format, announcing it would no longer develop or manufacture HD DVD players, leading almost all other HD DVD supporters to follow suit, thus effectively ending the format war.

This media format offers improved picture quality of 1080p; if the viewer's HD TV is not 1080p compatible, a Blu-Ray Disc player reverts to 720 resolution.
