Digital Visual Interface (DVI)

A type of connection that can carry both digital and analogue signals, and may be used to connect digital devices such as TVs and personal computers. Any audio-visual equipment that has a DVI connection will be able to receive digital signals without needing to convert them into analogue signals first, giving a purer and truer image.

There are 3 different types of DVI connection:

  • DVI-A (analogue only)
  • DVI-D (digital only)
  • DVI-I (digital and analogue)

DVI is now being superseded by HDMI, although the two are compatible.
