Thin Film Technology Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD)

Also known as Active Matrix LCD.

A form of LCD technology used in televisions, flat panel displays and projectors. TFT-LCD displays are more expensive than their passive matrix counterparts, but are less prone to ghosting, blurry images and poor contrast.

There are various types of TFT-LCD, including:

TN (Twisted Nematic) + Film

The cheapest and most common form, offering excellent response times but poor colour reproduction, viewing angles and contrast ratios.

IPS (in-Plane Switching) and S-IPS (Super-IPS).

The most expensive form, but generally considered the best overall LCD technology for image quality, colour accuracy and viewing angles.

MVA (Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment).

Used as a compromise between TN and IPS, offering better colour reproduction and viewing angles than TN panels, but slower response times than TN or S-IPS. Example of this category include PVA (Patterned Vertical Alignment), used by Samsung.
